The gameplay itself is not horrible, but the "behind the scenes" work is trash. With constant crashes and crazy high requirements to do anything or get anything powerful, the game is very improperly balanced. Niantic needs to balance the game better while improving nearly all the inner workings of it. It still kills my battery life.
