Decent update but crashy... +EDIT!

Edit:
What is the point and/or effort of keeping a Pokémon in a gym? Had one defending a gym for 12 hours, another for 8. They were returned but no coin update or noticeable increase in stats. Am I missing something?

Like the new update with the gyms and all.. when it works. Often I interact with a gym and the app crashes or the screen freezes, forcing a restart of the app to use it again.

iP7, latest iOS 10.
